PROJECT • SOUTH PARK STREET

In partnership with SmithMaran Architecture + Interiors • Arterial • Township of Montclair • NJ Dept of Community Affairs

In the heart of downtown Montclair, at the west end of Church Street lies South Park Street. For decades this street had been little more than a “parking lot” and vehicular cut-‐through. In the ‘70’s the municipal Master Plan recognized a need to transform this space from a car-‐centric street into a place for people. Over the last decade, through iterations of private and public planning and partnerships, meeting the identified need developed into a vision of a vibrant, pedestrian oriented town square for gathering, shopping and hosting events. That vision was scrutinized and debated until broad public support grew and final plans were drawn. The built product is a pedestrian friendly “flexible street” that supports adjacent retail uses; promotes social and public interaction; balances the needs of pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists; and allows for programming and events at any scale -‐ from intimate to 2000 people. Public feedback has been incredibly positive.
