Music Beyond Measure (MBM) is a registered nonprofit in Montclair that engages trauma survivors in arts-based, healing-centered programs that teach coping skills through music education, collaboration in songwriting, and empowerment through performance. MBM would like to invite you to join the Montclair Community Chorus (MCC). An 8-week choral project based in Montclair, NJ that brings the songs from MBM’s flagship program, the “Sing Your Story” Project to life.
Since 2014, MBM has partnered professional musicians with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or child abuse to compose the lyrics and music to their own original songs. The MCC is a new initiative that will serve as a public performance extension of this project. The chorus will be composed of beginner to advanced singers from various backgrounds who will perform the songs written by survivors, as well as arranged versions of pop, jazz, gospel, or R&B songs meant to spark community discussions about trauma.
The MCC will be joined by members of the Women’s Fire Choir, a Montclair-based chorus that sings to raise awareness around peace and justice issues. Formed in the wake of the 2016 elections, the group blends voices and hearts to create a more harmonious world.
The chorus will connect participants to professional musicians to learn and perform arrangements of the songs, culminating in a free concert to take place in the Montclair community. The chorus is free and open to individuals from across Essex County who are at least 16 years of age.
