    On Wednesdays at 2 pm, Montclair Public Library hosts The Every Wednesday Matinee, a film series presented in its auditorium. In February 2020 we will be celebrating Black History Month by watching the following movies:

    The Learning Tree (February 5) – Starring: Kyle Johnson, Alex Clarke, Estelle Evans, Dana Elcar, Mira Waters, Joel Fluellen, Malcolm Atterbury, Richard Ward, Russell Thorson, Peggy Rea. written and directed by Gordon Parks, a celebrated photographer. It depicts the life of Newt Winger, a teenager growing up in Cherokee Flats, Kansas, in the 1920s, and chronicles his journey into manhood that is marked by tragic events. The Learning Tree is based on Parks’ semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, which was published in 1963. (1969, 107 minutes, Color)

    No Movie February 12 due to Staff In-Service Day

    Sounder (February 19) – Starring: Cicely Tyson, Paul Winfield, Kevin Hooks, James Best, Carmen Matthews, Taj Mahal. Sounder is the story of a Black sharecropper family in Louisiana during the Depression. When the father is imprisoned for stealing food for his children, his wife and eldest son strive to provide love, security and strength to the family. (1972, 105 minutes, Color)

    Glory (February 26) – Starring: Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan Freeman. Tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment (the Union Army’s second African-American regiment in the American Civil War) and their heroic actions at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. (1989, 12 minutes, Color)
