Professor & Internal Wizard of Oz Club Vice President Ryan Bunch will give a lecture entitled “From the White City to the Emerald City: L. Frank Baum and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.” Ryan will talk about how the 1893 World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago served as inspiration for the Emerald City in L. Frank Baum and W.W. Denslow’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). In addition to discussing the likely influences of the fair’s White City architecture on the depiction of the Emerald City in Baum’s words and Denslow’s illustrations, Ryan will suggest some ways in which the fair’s exhibits in arts and science were part of a cultural and technological landscape that fired Baum’s imagination, influenced his Oz books, and informed utopian visions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
